Motivational Interviewing 101

A strengths-based 1-day workshop for growing energy for change

Do you support people who want change, but feel stuck, unsure, or ambivalent? This practical workshop introduces Motivational Interviewing (MI), a collaborative approach that helps people explore what matters to them, strengthen motivation, and take meaningful next steps.

Workshop overview

Format: 1-day workshop

Motivational Interviewing is a powerful, person-centred approach used to help people find and strengthen their own motivation and commitment for change.

Used across health, education, counselling, coaching, community work, leadership, and supervision, MI supports conversations where change is more likely to happen because people are invited to explore and resolve ambivalence rather than being told what to do.

What you’ll learn

  • Explore the principles of MI and practise foundational skills
  • Understand the four MI processes: engaging, focusing, evoking, and planning
  • Recognise and respond to different types of ambivalence
  • Use techniques that encourage “change talk” — the language of motivation
  • Plan practical ways to apply MI in your own role or workplace

Who it’s for

This workshop is ideal for people working in helping, guiding, teaching, coaching, supervising, or community-facing roles who want more effective conversations about change.

Facilitator

The workshop is led by Paul Montgomery, who has a passion for helping people discover and grow energy for change.
