Living in and working with communities impacted by natural disaster

It was a great privilege to be invited to facilitate a “Team Recovery” workshop with Interrelate colleagues in the Lismore region of northern NSW, Australia.
The workshop provided a chance for workers to acknowledge “vicarious resilience”, the skills and wisdom being developed in witnessing community members responses to challenging times. In the words of one participant, “it’s as if the flood watered seeds of our core values and awareness that we were able to find and grow when all the fluff and superficial things were washed away.”
As well as questioning the concept of resilience, we used “open space technology” to identify hopes for next steps in local recovery journeys, including activities in the 19 schools still undergoing significant reconstructions.
